RA 9003: The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000

Solid Waste Management (SWM) is considered to be one of the most serious environmental issues in the Philippines. The annual waste generation was estimated to 10 million tons in 2010 and this is expected to rise by 40% in 2020, that is why Republic Act (RA) 9003 was implemented to reduced the municipal waste generation.

What is RA 9003?

Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 is an act providing for an ecological solid waste management program, creating the necessary institutional mechanisms and incentives, declaring certain acts prohibited and providing penalties, appropriating funds therefore, and other purposes.

Why we should obey RA 9003?

Disobeying RA 9003 comes with a penalty with a fine of not less than ₱300.00 but not more than ₱1,000.00 or render community service for not less than 1 day to not more than 15 days or it can be both.

RA 9003 was implemented since 2000 and it benefits are it ensures the protection of the public health and the environment and it utilize environmentally-sound methods that maximize the utilization of valuable resources and encourage resource conservation and recovery.
